Who We Are

On Thursday, September 27th, 2001, residents of Solano County came together for the first time at First Baptist Church in Vallejo, CA in a forum to discuss the horrific events of September 11th and the governments response to those events. These residents discussed principles of unity- which provide the vision for the newly formed grassroots organization called the Solano Peace and Justice Coalition.

On Thursday, October 4th, The Solano Peace and Justice Coalition met for the second time at First Baptist Church and adopted six principles of unity. The group then formed several committees: the media committee, the vigil/flyer committee, the teach-in/education committee, and student outreach committee, and the fundraising committee.

The third meeting was held at the coalition's new location at First Christian Church in Vallejo. Thursday nights become the regular evening for the group and First Christian Church was the coalition's meeting place for several years. Over time, fewer members could attend these Thursday night meetings and although we began only having meetings there twice a month, our rent remained the same. Eventually our funds were all going out to rent so that four or five people could meet twice a month there. After much discussion, we have decided that we need to spend more of our funds on staying in contact with the members and less of our funds on rent. We have also realized that many working people are not available on weeknights for business meetings. We are now in the process of looking at alternative sites where we can meet on Saturdays or Sundays during the day or evening or sites where we can meet on other evenings besides just Thursday during the week. If you know of any sites that you would like to suggest, please email us at sylvanr@comcast.net or call (415) 644-8655. Please check your emails, the website or the newsletter for meeting times and places as these may change from month to month at this time.
